Lastly, now that I think of it, this is not the first time Semana has said that reelection won't be possible.

US lack of action? Two words: Plan Colombia. If Colombia (Uribe) isn't getting what he wants now, it's because he doesn't understand US politics...And the US hasn't promised anything, in fact, it's been very careful not to make such a move.
Also, the only "peace" I can think of would be from about 1934 - 1947ish, if that counts.

For once, I agree with Jaime Bustos. Colombia went through six back-to-back civil wars in just the 19th century. In the 20th, the wars were layers right on top of one another - dopers, farc, paras, eln, pirates, garden-variety thugs, all sorts of dirtbags, each with his own war to plague the country with.

What a bleak and wretched tour to the states that must have been for Silva. I don't see why Colombia bothers anymore, they just keep getting told the same old thing, the pretty words and the lack of action. Now they're shipping troops to Afghanistan. I don't agree with that at all, not until Uncle Sam coughs up the aid he's promised and the trade he owes.

I wonder what by "47 years of peace" Mr Uribe meant. Maybe it was another of his lapsus linguis and what he really meant was the last 47 years of internal war, but who knows? this guy can say whatever comes to his mind with the guarantee his words will soon be forgotten. Anyone that knows some colombian history is familiar with the fact that Colombia has not got any lasting peace period in the last 200 years.
