I agree absolutely with Alvaro Hurtados's comment. As a colombian I have a lot more information about what happened (and it was awful); but this article is lacking all of it.
Camilo Wilson: Peter Deshazo is right, COLOMBIA IS A VIRANT DEMOCRACY

I don't think it would be unwarranted to remind some of the readers and commentators that the current Colombian administration was not in power when this massacre took place. Perhaps that doesn't matter when wanting to lash out against the "regime" and mix everything together without any concern for the details, as feeding political passions and generic moral outrage may be more important than anything else, but I would imagine that those truly interested in actual justice would care.

It's equally disgusting that the U.S. Government has a cozy relationship with a regime many of whose officials and supporters countenanced, and continue to countenance, such wanton violence. Other concerns—and precisely what those are still remain somewhat obscure to some of us—trump a concern for justice, social and otherwise.

Peter DeShazo, Director of the Americas Program at Center for Strategic and International Studies (Washington, D.C.) and former high-level State Department official, says in an article in yesterday’s Miami Herald, that “Colombia is a vibrant democracy, not without some notable weaknesses but nonetheless committed to democratic principles.” CSIS has long been not only a vocal supporter of Alvaro Uribe and U.S. Colombia policy, but a forum for Uribe and that policy. Quite apart from being somewhat contradictory, statements like DeShazo's are also disgusting, yet seem to be the norm among Washington policymakers as regards Colombia.

But howcome justice is going to be served if the masterminds are still holding high ranking positions in government as well as in the Army corps. Furthermore the killings continue according to latest HRW report.

I remember when that came out. It made me sick to my stomach and so terribly sad. Absolutely disgusting that justice isn't being served.
